We are a web based not-for-profit entity with a mission to create a forum to display and to promote the artistic and cultural creations conceived at higher educational institutions around the world, using the Internet as the medium to showcase these creative works.
"Where could all of the students at Indiana could display their artwork ... in one place?"
It wasn't exactly a simple question, but the answer turned out to be easy enough: the Internet. Indiana business professor Rick Shrimper and alum Zach Posner had the idea about a year ago, and quickly realized that it wasn't just Indiana students that needed a place to show their work. It was everybody - college kids across the country who spend their free time flyering for their sculpture or painting exhibits.
Young photographers making 'zines of their pictures. Band after band clamoring to get heard by anyone with ears.
Most of all, Rick and Zach realized that a united forum where a huge variety of art could be shown would be a great opportunity for major media companies to sponsor and distribute the work of up and coming artists. Thus, CultureU was born, not as a money-making entity, but as a non-profit organization. They took on a team of young web developers and designers, and launched their beta version of CultureU in late 2004.
As you can see, we're adding new features every day and constantly trying to make CultureU bigger and better. While we're spending a lot of time in talks with major corporations to secure funding and sponsorship for our artists, our number one commitment is to the creative people that make our site what it is. We have a satellite team of individuals from universities across the country who seek out new talent, develop new programming, and listen to what our users have to say. If you'd like to be a part of that team as a representative from your school, check out our job listings for more information on what you can do as a college representative.
In the meantime, create your profile and support your friends by checking out their work. Of course, if you have the inclination, upload some of your own work, and spread the word.
Enjoy!
